Leinster PP Schools Senior Hurling "C1" Final 2021/2022

A combination of students from Presentation College Carlow and Gaelcholaiste Carlow were crowned C1 Leinster Senior Hurling Champions on Wednesday 26th January 2022 following a comprehensive victory over St Joseph’s CBS, Drogheda on a score-line of 5-14 to 0-4. Opening points from Alex Delaney and James Ingram settled the Carlow team down after some early wides before two quick-fire goals from Conor Treacy and Paul Fitzgerald put day-light between the teams. Further points from Ingram and two from wing-forward Daniel Bolger were backed up by goals from Treacy and another from Ingram on the half-hour mark to leave the half-time score 4-9 to 0-0.

To their credit Drogheda rallied at the beginning of the second half and scored the opening three points. There would be no miraculous come-back however as points from Delaney and centre-back Conaill Fitzpatrick were backed up with another James Ingram goal, taking his personal tally for the day to 2-4.

Conceding just 4 points to the North-Leinster champions was no mean feat and considerable amount of credit must go to team captain Sean Buggy who was immense at full-back, while mid-fielders Dylan McGrath and Paul Gray worked tirelessly to help out in defence and set up attacks.

The team will now play in a higher division next year and considering the majority of the panel is made up of students in Third and Fourth Year, there could be more great days yet to come on the hurling pitch for the two schools.

From a club perspective, there were 5 Carlow clubs represented; Setanta Ceatharlach, Carlow Town Hurling Club, Burren Rangers, Naomh Brid and Mount Leinster Rangers with at least half the team being made up of players from the Carlow Town/Setanta U15 and U17 teams which will compete in 2022.

Congratulations to Knockbeg's U-14 Hurlers who won the TopOil South Leinster Final on Friday 18th May 2018 in Fenagh Training Centre, beating PDLS Bagenalstown 3-11 to 1-8. There was a healthy Setanta representation on the victorious Knockbeg team, all fresh from their U-15 win with the club on the previous evening, so a huge well done to Rian Payne, Alan Geoghegan, Conal Hickson, Kyle Nolan and Jack Murphy.
